The Dragon People

The Dragon People

They came from the sea, appearing from the mist atop mighty sea dragons wearing the furs of giant beasts, wielding wickedly sharp claws they ripped into us and through us like we might the corn. Northward they moved, nothing stirred after their passing, but tongues of fire licked the sky and the shadows of death fell to the earth to fill themselves. Northward they pushed 'til they came upon a meadow framed by the great Ouse and here they stopped, here they gouged the earth and toppled the trees, here they made their den. By the vale of thorns and it's once proud ruins, long abandoned, they rest, they wait and they strike. The Dragon People are here.

This will be my Viking Army Blog. I'm setting them up to be based in Buckingham, which was origionally a Saxon settlement in the 800's, but was occupied and owned by the Danish numerous times. Buckingham means meadow of Bucca's people. The Vale of thorns is Thornborough, my home village, situated just outside Buckingham, it was originally a Roman settlement.

Nice write-up Toby!

It will be cool to field an army of your ancestors - makes it more personal, if that makes sense!

Here's my proposed army lists. I'm aiming towards the 2000pt one, while the 1000pt one is for monday's game against John. The 1000pt list has been constructed to include one of each unit type from my main army, so I can see how they work and get used to the rules, the character is the BSB from the main list, though obvioously not on BSB duty. The army General is too expensive to fit in, 200pts is his basic cost!

General - 200
BSB - 100
24 Hirdmen, 14 spear, 6 dhw, fc - 391
24 Hirdmen, 13 spear, 6 dhw, fc - 389
28 Bondi, fc - 211
24 Bondi, fc - 183
10 Bondi, bows - 70
10 Bondi, bows - 70
10 Bondi, bows - 70
9 Thralls - 36
9 Thralls - 36
18 Vikings, 8 spear, 4 ahw, 4 dhw, Javelins, leader, musician – 244
= 2000pts

Hersir – 85
24 Hirdmen, 10 spear, 6 dhw, fc – 383
24 Bondi, fc – 183
10 Bondi, Bows – 70
9 Thralls – 36
18 Vikings, 8 spear, 4 ahw, 4 dhw, Javelins, leader, musician – 244
= 1000pts

You say basic cost, what else could you kit him with? Obviously no magic swords of cheesing or reverse ward saves of bentness!

Basic cost means you get the bloke, light armour, hand weapon & shield. You can equip him with a horse, double handed weapon, javelin, additional hand weapon, throwing or thrusting spear.
To get an idea of cost a Norman general costs 190, but comes with a Throwing spear in addition to other starting items, while a Saxon general costs 170 with hand weapon, shield light armour and throwing spear.

Of course the defining factor is the Viking is built like a brick out-house

Ok here we go:

saxon
m ws bs s t a I w ld
4 6 4 4 4 3 6 3 9

Norman
m ws bs s t a I w ld
4 6 4 4 4 4 6 3 9

Viking
m ws bs s t a I w ld

Bearing in mind infantry generally have a 5+ armour save and cav 4+, st 5 is massive!

A gaffa is there for Ld not combat prowess really for most armies. In WAB when he is killed every unit has to take a panic test! Use him wisely :?

Yep, they aren't the power houses of fantasy, which is why the Viking guy is so exceptional. The whole game, while initially looking like fantasy, seems to be quite different and more tactical than the I point my killer unit with uber character here and your unit dies, which can happen in fantasy.

It doesn't just die, its chopped into little itty-bitty parts and ground into the dirt. Then the big nasty unit with uber character goes looking for its friends!
