Saxon Blog

I might aswell do one, about time the Editor got his hands dirty on the article front.

So I've got Saxons, my main reason being I don't know all the ins and outs of WAB yet so having loads of troops with different abilities wasn't a sensible choice. Also the other army I was tempted by (Vikings) was snapped up by Toby.

I am looking forward to taking on the WAB scene and I know I will enjoy painting them as it's my preference to painting doing Historical stuff.

I've posted a few army lists around all mostly being shot down in flames but I'm not bothered if I turn up to the event in Oct with a truly rubbish army so long as it A-looks good, B-allows me to play and most important C- allows me to enter the event so I can go singing

This is the current work in progress rubbish.

Eorl (General) 150pts

Ealdorman 60pts
Ealdorman, BSB 75pts

40 Thegns
12 Huscarls
20 Ceorls, muis, Sandard
20 Ceorls, muis, Sandard
20 Ceorls, muis, Sandard
20 Ceorls, muis, Sandard
20 Ceorls, muis, Sandard

10 Geburs, slings
10 Geburs, slings
10 Geburs, slings

1785pts

I'm not sure which cav unti to put in, Thegns on horses at 19pts a model or some Gasraidh as it is characterful for a Northumbrian army to have a fair bit of Cav and mix with Scots

Your not coming if you sing!

How is your army coming along, basing, cleanining etc?

Mines being packed over the next couple of days ready for monday lunchtime! If I get time might base it up for monday night. Toby can have some heavy cavalry in his face

Well i am away for 10 days on Holiday. So I won't be doing anytihing for them, but I have ordered a few more Huscarls and Thegn models and the brass spears as they are much better.

Other than that nothing so far, on the look out though for WHFB bases

I've got 20 bases you can have (20mm) It might be worth ordering some 80mm by 20mm or 40mm by 40mm. I've been looking at unit sizes, and 30+is the norm for shieldwall units. You've got to think about WAB rules when building an army. The fall back in good order is an classic example. My Norman knights will struggle to win games for me against large blocks. If I can get you to less than 2:1 then I'll feel confident charging you.

Yes indeed and dont forget FBIGO has to OVER 2:1 not double! It's little rules like this that really make the difference to WAB compared to fantasy and it has implications on all aspects of the game really. You've gotta build your list to hold a charge and be able to whittle away at the enemy.

Right, I am back from Holiday unfortunately for all of you.

And I have been having some serious thinking along with harrasing Johnny and Toby about my Saxons.

I was originally going to go for a Northumbiran army as I liked the idea of a Viking influenced army with Cav and Scot mercenaries, only to have it shot down by the fact I couldn't have Ceorls! boo hiss

So I have settled on Mercia for the time beign to do my force on as it's got everything minus the Cav in mass so decent all round force so far with Welsh Merc.
This might change back to Northumbrian if I need to have a smaller force of Thegns and Huscarsl which would be quite Hard. and Cost less £££

So Scotty, have you decided on your list?

I'm going for a County of Flanders list. I'll keep some cavalry but several more units of foot will 'creep' in.

Flanders was an allie of the Normans as well as having several wars against them! Complicated times when you start reading!
