The Royal Navy Blog (uncharted seas)

Rite well - seeing as Uncharted Seas is this year 'game from Bovy' I thought I'd celebrate the occasion by breaking out my very dusty paint collection. And why not throw a blog into the mix as well? So here we go! The advancement of the Royal Navy from box to board as best I can. And who knows i might even get my scratch-building hat on and build my own port 8-)

Tuesday after Bovi and im happy to report the first semi-completed ships are rolling off the production line.

A cruiser and a Frigate - start off small eh :P

I have decided to leave the Sails for the moment. I imagine they are gonna be quite fiddly and would be nice to have some ships done first :)

Rite Weds after bovi and im pleased to report more toys have been painted!!! Yes I'm as shocked as you are, one of the benefits of small systems I suppose, low number of models on of the disadvantages of fantasy - anyway onto the ships.

I am painting them up with two stage brown, Schorched then Bestail, Chainmail on the cannons, Astronomican grey on the windows and finally a Chestnut ink wash, granted this isnt very detailed and certainly wont win games day but i like the look of them and hey - thats half the fun isnt it, being able to enjoy the look of your own army!! Also this paint scheme is very quick which is always a plus point!

Two more Frigates join the first

Image
My first completed (sort of) squadron - is that the correct term :?

Image
A second Cruiser meaning now fully half of my models are painted!!! - things are looking good

Image
Those windows are a bit of a bugger - but they look pretty good when done painstakingly :P

Image
The Royal navy is becoming a force to be reckoned with!! - Just look at all those ships :D

Im liking these smaller pictures - the first ones were too big.

OK so 2 cruisers and 3 frigates down, 3 frigates, 1 cruiser and the battleship to go! I can do this by monday I can! :P

Fantastic work there James. I think the wooden look is perfect for ....er.....wooden ships  ;)

I think we should get a started with the standard box sets on Monday so battleship, 3 cruisers and 6 frigates should make for some good games.

You'll all be pleased to know I found a spare hour yesterday and was busy beavering away with the paintbrush with the result giving another 3 Frigates to the painted collection. - Have to admit these frigates are staring to look like a 18th Century version of the german E-boat with no sails on them :P

Image
They dont look that much different from the other frigates so no point clogging up space with useless pictures.

The good news is I only have 2 models left on the TODO list - a lone cruiser and the all important battleship. The cruiser i hope to get done at some point over the weekend so i can spend a (hopefully) sunny monday afternoon painting the big boy so i can bring the whole set painted to club in the evenin :D

Very nice looking models there bud, the brown look is simple but it works wonders. Great stuff!

Agreed. What colour are you doing the sails?

Hmmm As far as sails go im thinking - grey basecoat (possibly astronomican grey) then mixing skull white with khaki for the top layer and the cross of St George as a finishing touch.

As an extra i was considering a weathered approach but not sure how to do it, a grey ink maybe? possibly using the army painter (but it might be too dark)......

On a side track Ive been having a think about scratch building a port of some description, but I need your advice, which do you think would be best, a Dover port style, concrete strips and surrounding walls with defensive turrets in etc or a more rustic port, things like a wooden jetty made out of matchsticks - think pirates of the caribbean style.

Both of these are possible but the first would require significantly more work....
