Norman WAB blog

Postby Jonny H » Jun 19th, '09, 05:34

Well I've decided to create an Norman list for Oct Warhammer Historical Weekend.

I was hoping to do a Punic War Event for my first WAB event, but that won't be the case.

As I'm going to a campaign weekend my list is not going include mercenaries with crossbows, or knights with lances. From what I've read, those two things really 'miff' other players off!

So why the Normans? Two reasons, the shields - I really like the kite shape. Also club variety. Toby has his naughty vikings and Scotty has his Saxons. I like the idea of an English shieldwall army, but it'll be more fun playing games and throwing knight blocks at solid lines of foot! we can always swap armies one night.

I've picked up some overtime at work to pay for my army whilst I sort out my excess 'toys' to sell. So 130 days to get my army done, should be easy!

That would depend on the army content, if I remember the unit ack prices correct the mounted list I put up will be 100-150, not bad for 2k points.

That depends massively on your army, it's contents and where you get them from, my list if I purchase them from the same supplier will roughly cost a futher £100, putting total cost at £145, Scotts will likely cost more as he's got far more troops in it.
Obviously I could use a different supplier and get it cheaper, but I think at a loss in quality too. Plastic ranges are much, much cheaper as well, £17 for 30 models is a bargain!

I've got a rough working of £160, but I'll Have some 'extra' figures with that. For a 2k list that is cheap considering it is all metal.

12 Coloni (Unfree - Skirmishers) Bows - 60pts

Comes in at 1998pts with a break point of 81

The danger units are the Knights. They'll do the real work with some support from the archers and foot. The light cavalry will be running about looking for small skirmishers to pick on.

Scary looking army you have there bud, especially with Ferocious charge on your knights. Did painting come into the equation when choosing this force over a foot one?

Nope, historical fact. The Normans turned up for a fight with lots of heavy cavalry which would do the fighting after a few volley's from the archers. The foot did a lot of spectating! Its still a bucket load of models with 48 being cavalry, 1=2 really. So in total 156 counting that way. Thats a painting plan of just over one figure a day. Scotty has the paint armies quick ability so he'll be fine. Do you think that you'll manage an army Toby?

Oh and the knights can be serously hampered by large uniits of foot. I can break them on the charge but if they outnumber me over 2:1 they fall back in good order. So it's gonna be all about when I charge. Its a lot more tactical that WHFB and I'm using my khorne knight unit of horrible filth to crush you!
